Timp and Thrift

8/1

Leman family sustainability journal for the week:

🌧 So thankful for the rain this week! It made our Timp hike cool and heavenly. We went almost exactly a year ago...see pics for snowpack comparison....and for a picture of what the Emerald Lake "glacier" used to look like back in the day, when the Annual Timpanogos Hike was possibly the biggest organized climb in the world, with up to 10,000 people participating!

The "glacier" never technically was one, though much of the snow used to remain year-round. Not this year...it looked to us like it could be gone by fall. Will it ever be mistaken for a glacier again??

👚Thrifting. Clara was able to get almost everything she needed for school at Plato's Closet in Orem, and I got these great Nikes...(though turns out they make my feet hurt so I need to either sell them back or give them away 😑) "Fast fashion" is responsible for a decent chunk of emissions and water pollution worldwide, so better to buy new no more than we need. Need I mention thrifting is way better for the wallet too?

🗞News:

🌤A new report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is coming out soon. This article includes a cool chart that shows switching to solar and wind could help us reduce emissions to where they need to be by 2030:

📈This rather sad study puts a number (and a resulting dollar cost) on how many people are likely to die worldwide by 2050 because of climate change if we continue polluting as we have, vs. how many lives might be saved if we don't:

As always, the #1 most important thing you can do to help is to call your reps and tell them that clean energy is important to you, and that you will vote accordingly 😀:

If you're scared, call after office hours and leave a message!
