Soap and stuff

Sustainability journal from the last few weeks, with superfluous sibling triumph pic:

*Made some more laundry soap today! The last batch, which I used exclusively, cost me about $3.50 to put together and lasted almost 5 months. It worked great and cut down our single-use plastic pollution. Recipe below. Next time I'm going to make it with Dr. Bronner's bar soap, even though it's pricier. It's doesn't include some problematic ingredients that Fels-Naphtha has and is still cheaper than bottled laundry soap.

*Refilled my hand soap. Refills cost <$1. Blue Land, who made the great one with white pumps, makes a refill tablet that costs $2 that's also really good, but DIY is super easy and cheaper. Also cuts down on plastic.

*Used my bar shampoo and conditioner. I like the conditioner but don't love this shampoo yet... I'll look for a different brand next time. (Bar cosmetics also cut down on plastic... and why pay for all that water?)

*Recycled some glass. We keep a box tucked in the corner next to the fridge and take them down to the bin at Smith's when it gets full. Fun fact: glass is one of the only materials you can recycle over and over, and there's a shortage of it.

*Harvested some plums and other stuff. Gonna make me some prunes! Heck yeah!

*Met with someone from O2Utah, an organization seeking to help elect candidates of any party who will make responsible environmental choices. Check out some legislation they're backing next legislative session in the pictures.

As always, big change can only happen with good governmental policy, though people can make a difference within the corporations they work for too.

O2Utah is encouraging people to call their reps and ask them what they're going to do about whatever environmental issue you care about...clean air, clean water, open spaces, whatever.

Let me know if you'd like to reach out but are unsure how to go about it.

What do you care about?
