I got this picture book for my mom for her birthday. The author is Berkeley Breathed, the artist responsible for the Opus cartoons (that underwear-donning penguin used to disgust me; still does sometimes, but I think it's pretty funny now). His hilarious parody of mothers and the kids that despise them gives way to a fable that honestly made me cry right there in the bookstore. Call me sentimental. SPOILER ALERT: The mom gives the kid her space helmet, thereby saving his life, but possibly ending hers! (My dad actually thought the mom dies. I think he still thinks that. He's wrong). Anyway, I loved it. Here's what the author has to say about it.

I really want to know what you were thinking when it made you cry. I think you were thinking about how you feel about your child but did you also think that someone can feel that strongly about you?
