Just finished this book last night after a frantic rush to the end...This is a great throwback gothic-ish novel reminiscent of the likes of Rebecca, Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre--with definitely the same creepy atmosphere; it's full of British fog, creaky floorboards, scandals, old women with secrets and...ghosts??? A definite recommend! A really fun read. Thanks for the tip, Amanda!
And while I'm at it, try The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. It's scarier, and sadder. But I do love a good ghost story.
Extra points if you can tell me where my title quote comes from!

Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high
Take a look, it's in a book...
I actually just read that book and finished it this morning. That's so funny! I borrowed it from my mom.
I'm glad you liked it. By the way, do you remember what Margaret's (was that her name?) sister's name was? I went back to find it and couldn't.
I just read it too. Very entertaining. My one complaint is that there wasn't enough build up to the romance! For most of the way through I thought she was going to hook up with that 60 year old chef guy. The doctor thing came too out of the blue for me.
Funny, Caroline...I read the book a few weeks ago, and now I don't even remember the doctor guy. Was he the old lady's doctor...? I only remember the chef. There was definitely more "buildup" to that relationship.
